In an effort to identify risk factors from a variety of perspectives and disciplines, this section is provided as a place to post risk factor information gained from a wide variety of disciplines including but not strictly limited to substance abuse.

- CDC's Behavioral Risk and Surveillance System, BRFSS
- CDC's Youth Risk and Behavioral Surveillance System, YRBS
- New report from US Marine Corp describing risk factors including beginning drinking at age 13 or earlier (5.5 times more likely to be engaging in risky drinking). Other factors associated with risky drinking included engaging in smoking, coming from a rural or small-town community, enduring childhood sexual or emotional abuse, and experiencing alcohol abuse or mental illness in the household.
